Eskom announces load shedding schedule for the weekend

 ·13 Oct 2023

Eskom says load shedding will continue to be implemented during the evenings this weekend, but there will continue to be more respite during the night.

Eskom said that it will continue to implement stage 2 load shedding from 16:00 until 05:00.

Load shedding will then be suspended from 05:00 to 16:00, with stage 2 then returning. Eskom stated that this cycle will be repeated until further notice.

Below is the schedule of load shedding for this weekend:

Friday, 13 October

  • 16h00 to 00h00 – Stage 2

Saturday, 14 October

  • 00h00 to 05h00 – Stage 2
  • 05h00 to 16h00 – Suspended
  • 16h00 to 00h00 – Stage 2

Sunday, 15 October

  • 00h00 to 05h00 – Stage 2
  • 05h00 to 16h00 – Suspended
  • 16h00 to 00h00 – Stage 2

Eskom said that it has been able to keep breakdowns below 13,384 MW whilst generating capacity out for planned maintenance currently sits at 6,510 MW.

Breakdowns are currently below Eskom’s target to keep unplanned outages below 15,400 MW, as per its summer plan. Eskom said that keeping breakdowns below this threshold would lead to a maximum level of load shedding of stage 4.

In addition, Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa said that increased planned maintenance is keeping breakdowns to a minimum.

“There’s a correlation between planned maintenance and the rate of failures of the units. The team is seeing when they return the units; these units remain on load for longer periods… their efficiency and reliability are improving,” Ramokgopa said at a media briefing earlier this week.
