September was a notable month for SUV sales in South Africa, as thousands of units sold from dozens of popular brands – with price tags ranging from R484,000 to well over R1 million.
SUVs have gained immense popularity in South Africa over the years. These versatile vehicles have become a common sight on the country’s roads, and their growing demand can be attributed to several key factors.
South Africa’s diverse terrain and challenging road conditions make SUVs a practical choice. Whether navigating rough off-road trails or tackling pothole-ridden city streets, SUVs offer a higher ground clearance and sturdy build, providing drivers with confidence and safety.
The ample cargo space and towing capacity of SUVs make them ideal for carrying equipment and gear, catering to the needs of outdoor enthusiasts and families that need the room.
The popularity of the vehicle segment hasn’t gone unnoticed as car brands continue to launch new models every year – which includes two all-new SUV entries, the electric Mahindra Thar.e and GWM Tank 300.
Mahindra unveiled its electric concept version of its popular Thar 4×4 at the company’s Futurescape event in Cape Town, alongside the next-generation bakkie concept.
The Mahindra Thar.e will head for South Africa when it reaches production form, but it does not yet have a timeline mapped out for when this will be.
However, The new GWM Tank 300 is much closer to reality for South African motorists, as it is set to make its South African debut before the end of 2023, the manufacturer confirmed all the way back in January.
SUVs may not sell as much as smaller and cheaper crossovers, but they are still a popular type of vehicle. This is evident in the success of top performers like the Toyota Fortuner, which sold almost 900 units last month.
By a significant margin, this SUV is the best-selling in the country. The second best-selling vehicle is the Haval H6 with 453 units, followed by the VW Tiguan in third place with 246 units, and the BMW X3 produced locally with 222 units.
Toyota then claimed a second spot in the top five, as the Land Cruiser 300 is in fifth with 219 units sold. it must be noted that brands that do not disclose individual model sales, such as Mercedes-Benz and Porsche, were not included.
For interest purposes, other models to make it into the top 10 included the Ford Everest, Chery Tiggo 8 Pro, Land Rover Defender, BMW X5, and Hyundai Tucson.
